About Me

Hello! My name is Jason Hu and I am currently a Junior at Hagerty High School in Central Florida. Food plays a really big role in my life whether it be cooking with my dad or overeating his amazing food I'm always obsessing over the next thing. Other than food I enjoy rocking climbing, volleyball, and learning about distinctive cultures. As a second-generation Chinese immigrant, I find that food is the pinnacle of culture that allows us to connect with others regardless of status, race, or religion. Food is Culture and by recording and documenting the relationship I hope to preserve its bond to people.

Why The Savory Stories Project?

Putting it simply I just really like everything about food, the smell, the looks, the taste, and what it represents: the culmination of culture in a mouthful.

1. Food Obsession
2. Chinese Culture

Food is one of the clearest and deepest connections that I have to Chinese Culture and allows me to reflect on the importance of food to sharing culture.

3. Cooking

Cooking at its core just feeds the food obsession but it also illustrates the cultural qualities of food: The regional spices, smells, and tastes forged together to paint a picture of the culture the food comes from.

4. Family

My Dad is the one who taught me how to cook and has been making me great food since day one. The teaching of cooking builds parallels to the learning of a culture, passing down techniques and tastes unique to every culture.

These personal experiences allowed me to reflect on the importance of connecting food to culture not only to transcend barriers between groups but also to endure through the journey of our lives. Wanting to build on these principles and record the experiences of others, I seek to exhibit the potential of food's enduring and connecting nature. The Savory Stories Project, I hope, is my contribution to preserving the unique cultures in society by documenting the remarkable lives of individuals in their connection to food.
