The Savory Stories Project Connecting Communities Through Food

Founded by Jason Hu

The Savory Stories Project seeks to document and preserve the unique stories of individuals relating to the enduring and connective nature of food. The project's mission is to capture these experiences by conducting, documenting, and preserving the oral histories of individuals whose lives are intertwined with the impactful role of food.

Oral History:
Real Stories from Real People. Oral histories are collections of historical information documenting the life experiences of interviewees through an oral medium. Though this project seeks to focus on their connection to food, documenting the intricate journeys of these individuals is just as important. Oral history is crucial because regardless of length or structure all interviews are insightful pieces of history that help us understand our communities, cultures, and society. At its core, oral history is the storytelling of life experiences and there is no expectation of information: Simply a reflection of an individual's life to share.

Target Participants:
Individuals from diverse communities with unique, inspiring, and enduring journeys are the focus of this project. These individuals come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and have embarked on remarkable paths, each filled with their own challenges, triumphs, and moments of resilience. By documenting the oral histories of these individuals, we aim to showcase the richness and diversity of human experiences. Their stories provide invaluable insights into how culture, heritage, and personal experiences shape lives, fostering greater understanding and appreciation across communities. Through the sharing of their narratives, we seek to inspire future generations and strengthen connections within and beyond cultural boundaries.

Goals:

  • Preservation of Culture and Life Stories: Our primary goal is to document and preserve the oral histories of individuals, particularly those from diasporic communities, to safeguard the cultural richness embedded in their experiences with food.

  • Education and Understanding: By capturing the intricate journeys of individuals and their connections to food, we aim to provide a profound education on cultural diversity. Understanding these stories fosters appreciation, empathy, and deeper connections within and across communities.

  • Interconnectedness Through Food: We aspire to strengthen intercultural relationships by showcasing the shared human experience of food. Food becomes a vessel for connection, fostering a sense of shared identity that transcends geographical and cultural distances.

  • Inspiring Future Generations: Through the documentation of these stories, we seek to inspire and educate future generations. Preserving cultural narratives ensures that the wisdom, traditions, and lessons embedded in these oral histories continue to shape our shared human experience.
